I would like to start off saying I am not a teacher, however I am a student of the arts. I found the book to be very insightful and it forced me to looking within and figure out what kind of student am I? I enjoyed the book as it reminded me of many of the lessons I leaned in “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” but geared for Martial Art teachers. It made me go within and ask myself, how do I show up in class as a student? Or better yet how do I show up in life? I want to say I live in what the book calls the W.I.N. quadrant, but to be honest I see a trace of myself living in the other three quadrants from time-to-time. With this new knowledge, I have the tools to recognize how I am showing up in class and proactively change my attitude or thinking if I am not in the WIN quadrant where I want to always live.The insight within the book I found amazing, because as a student I see the different types of students that fit into each of the four quadrants. Hell, I can classify each my co-workers into those same four quadrants. So, I 100% agree with Sensei Collings and Master Fariborz “The Game” philosophy and various teaching concepts of dealing with each of the four types of quadrant personalities.
I wholeheartedly agree with the concept of the three types of students, the customer, the client and the student. Once again, I have personal known all three types of students, but I never thought of it like that until it was pointed out in the book. I can only imagine one only gets this type of intellectual insight after teaching over 30 years and experiencing these traits or types of students throughout the years. I can see how this could help tons of teachers create a framework to be able to communicate and interact effectively with the various types of students. I found I can apply the same principle in my professional life when dealing with my co-workers and clients.
Lastly I love the book because I personally enjoyed reading all the teacher interviews at the end of each chapter especially Taejoon Lee interview. All of interviews were great and I walked away with a little jewel from each of them.
I recommend this book for both teachers and students!

Even after 13 years as an Instructor, I still find it amazing that there is so much more to teaching the martial arts than just 'how to kick and punch'. "The Art Of Teaching The Martial Arts" is a comprehensive reference to the many lessons for the Instructor who wants to beuild a strong foundation, and then go even beyond instructing and venture into Teaching. Far more than the familiar publication with a series of photos, this work includes what would take years to cover in the usual class setting. A great resource for any student of self-improvement.
This book is an amazing collection of information. It goes far beyond what it's title suggests. The authors have successfully detailed not only how to teach, but how to understand and work with a wide variety of students. The material in this book suggests the authors have invested many years teaching and exemplify the good and the bad of being a teacher.
I believe this book is a good read for anyone, not only martial arts teachers and students, but for normal everyday people. There are some great lessons for everyday life that can be taken from the pages of this book.
This book also contains interviews with some world renowned martial artist and their thoughts on teaching.
All and all, this book was an easy read with ton of useful information that a person can incorporate into not only their teaching, but into their everyday life as well.
I really enjoyed this book. Drawing upon decades and decades of experience from the likes of Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, Master Steve Sexton, Richard Norton, Grand Master Taejoon Lee, and author Fariborz Azhakh, I found this treatise on martial arts to be an insightful philosophical discussion on teaching in general and teaching martial arts in particular. What interested me most about the book was that the author and those interviewed bring so much experience to the discussion. They themselves have been on a life long journey in martial arts. All long time teachers, the reader finds out what they all have to say about their experience in teaching martial arts.
The majority of the book focuses upon Azhakh's experience as a student and teacher. At the end of each chapter are questions that help to clarify the salient points of the chapter, much like a textbook. The reader has room to jot down notes. Chapters go in depth on subjects such as developing curriculum, working with students and their different personality types to maximize their experience and setting a direction for the dojo itself.
I think this is a must read for any martial arts teacher and anyone considering teaching martial arts because it provides a solid overview of what goes into running a studio day to day from the challenges of developing students to making sure the toilets in the dojo are clean before the doors open. And it draws conclusions based upon the examples and experiences of proven marital artists.
This was a very good read. I've read several other books on teaching martial arts, but the format and writing made this a smooth, enjoyable, concise, well written, entertaining read. There are no drills, or sample curriculum to use. Delving more into the warrior/spiritual aspects of martial arts than other books of the same subject, made this both inspiring and thoughtful. Interviews with several renowned martial artists was a great addition. This book has added to my knowledge in my attempt to be the best martial arts teacher I can be.
